Flathead Lake in Montana

Because of the crystal-clear water, Flathead Lake in Montana seems shallow, but in reality is 370 feet in depth.

FB Top Comments |  The shadow of the air bed says differen |  If it was actually 370 feet deep, the shadow will be a lot smaller . . | I think the moron posting means to say " it is crystal clear as seen in the photo and can reach depths of 370ft." |  Gosh, reading the comments on here makes me weep for the future... a bunch of idiots. It means the DEEPEST PART OF THE LAKE IS UP TO 370ft. DEEP!!! THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THE PHOTO WAS TAKEN ON THE DEEPEST PART! Gosh, some people are so dumb. According to the shadow's position, that part of the lake is only 7-8ft. in depth. Just because it says 370ft., doesn;t mean the whole lake is that deep... how difficult is that to grasp? Gosh, people are so stupid... | They just wanted to demonstrate how clear is the water by taking a shoreline picture that shows the bottom, you can't do that at 370 feet deep no matter how clear the water is. |  It's a real picture, but they Are listing the depth of the deepest spots, not her location. Therefor it kills the credit of this picture. I live 30min away | The original picture notes that this photograph was taken by someone on a dock right next to the girl. The water is clear and can reach 370 ft, but this pic is taken in an area that is not very deep. | The water is really like this in the deep water though.... If your on a rope swing or jumping off a boat it kind of freaks you out and you think your going to hit the bottom or a log and it ends up being a lot deeper. I've lived her all my life and know this fact is true to some point. |  The statement about the lake's depth is true, but it must be read in the right context. While the total depth of the lake, at its deepest point is 370 feet, the picture of lady on the inflatable, was obviously NOT captured at the lake's deepest point; it was taken from a dock near the shore. | Humm, I Googled & found "To be accurate, there are actually two rivers, the Flathead and Swan rivers supply clean fresh water to Flathead Lake year-round. Created by Ice Age glaciers, almost thirty miles long and fifteen miles across at it’s widest point, Flathead lake is the largest natural lake in western U.S. A 160 mile shoreline and water covers nearly two-hundred square miles of Montana – and at 300 feet deep, you’d better restring your fishing reel with some extra line". I do however doubt the area where this pic was taken is over 10-20 feet deep. | Flathead Lake (Salish: člq̓etkʷ [3]) is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River in the contiguous United States,[4][5] taking Red Lake (Minnesota) and Lake of the Woods to be north of the Mississippi River, rather than west of the river. With a surface area of between 191.5 sq mi (496 km2)[1] and 197 sq mi (510 km2), Flathead Lake is slightly larger than Lake Tahoe.[2] The lake is a remnant of the ancient, massive glacial dammed lake, Lake Missoula of the era of the last interglacial.[6] Flathead Lake is 27.3 mi (43.9 km) long and up to 15.5 mi (24.9 km) wide. Flathead lake has a maximum depth of 370.7 ft (113.0 m),[1] and an average of 164.7 ft (50.2 m). This makes Flathead lake deeper than the average depths of the Yellow Sea or the Persian Gulf. Polson Bay, at the lake's outlet was raised 10 ft (3.0 m) by Kerr Dam.[7] It is one of the cleanest in the populated world for its size and type.[8] | Flathead lake has a maximum depth of 370.7 ft (113.0 m), and an average of 164.7 ft (50.2 m). There's probably some idiot dropping a 20ft fishing boat in it right now leaking oil and gas all over the place. |  Local montana person here like most bodies of water on this planet its shallow by the shoreline but out in the middle its deep this pic must be from ccloser to the shore but u can still see the bottom out in the middle | That's not true. If the water was clean it would be darker algae can only grow when the sun light hits the bottom so that water is probably FILTHY IF THATS TRUE! Either that or it's chlorine | Well I go wake boarding up there every summer it's just a hour or two away and it's beautiful! And yes it is very deep in some spots where you can see pretty far down. It's just a picture of a part of the lake people don't need to be so judgmental about it. It is truly beautiful (in the summers) |  To bad where she is floating it's only 20 ft. In jasper Alberta there is a cliff diving lake called horse shoe lake it's just as clear but it's estimated over a 1000 ft | In recent weeks, Flathead Lake has entered the public awareness as the result of a viral image showing the lake’s ‘crystal’ clear waters. The viral image shows a woman floating on an inflatable raft, above — seemingly — absolutely crystal clear waters. The text that accompanies the image is rather misleading though — stating that the water is so clear that it gives the illusion of being much more shallow than it really is. The text references the lake’s maximum depth of 370 feet, implying that that is the depth of the water in the image… In truth though, the image was very clearly taken near the lake’s shore, and the depth of the water in the image — by no means — even approaches 370 feet… | The wood at the bottom would make some pretty beautiful flooring went it dries out | this can not to 370 feet. A: you would not be able to see the details on these logs and they would look like tooth picks. B: the woman's height and shadow to the logs and rocks look consistent to a water depth no deeper than 5-7 feet deep. I have pictures of family and friends in a stream with clear water just like this up in Elk co. PA. In the center I can not touch bottom. | ouch, there are some very angry birds here, but this is still a very beautiful pic no matter what any of you all say | Im looking at the value of the lumber under her..lol, if it's pine not so much but lumber in water for many years holds more value than fresh cut..lol. still a very cool post. |  i wish i can visit it i will tie a rope around those logs and get a car and pull them out
